Abstract

Spanish liberal historiography traditionally has felt uncomfortable with the fact that the first constitutionalism was so intolerant in religious matters. This paper analyzes the reasons why the Constitution of 1812 proclaimed the Catholic confessionalism and prohibited the exercise of any other cult and, on the other hand, the influence of Article 12 of the Constitution of 1812 in the Spanish constitutional history.
