Keywords: Commonwealth of Cataluña, composite state, capacity for self-government, administrative decentralization, level of competence

Abstract

This article attempts to approach the study of the Commonwealth of Cataluña from a historical perspective, paying particular attention to its legal-administrative nature and its quest to achieve a true status of self-government with respect to the rest of the State. It is appropriate to highlight the timeliness of the work. In 2014 took place the centenary of the Commonwealth of Cataluña and 108 years after its constitution, part of the spirit of the will of Catalan self-government existing in this institution is still present. Firstly, because it was the first decentralizing experience in Spain, and secondly, because we are facing the first step towards the creation of a composite state.
