The Constitutional project of 1873: the Spanish first republic between revolution and reality

Keywords: Republic, constitution, federalism, rights

Abstract

The constitutional project of 1873 was the first real attempt to articulate a federal and republican model in the history of Spain. The text, which was debated, but was not approved, configured a hybrid regime between presidentialism and parliamentarism, although closer to the presidential one, since it had as its most important reference the Constitution of the United States. The lack of commitment of the different parties in the project, together with the excessive haste with which it was proposed, hindered its viability.
