Abstract

This article analyzes the historical evolution of the island councils in the Canary Islands and the competencies assigned to local administration. It examines the regulations, doctrine, and jurisprudence determining the island councils’ own, delegated, and entrusted competencies. Additionally, the framework of the Canary Islands Statute of Autonomy is studied and compared with other autonomous communities to identify similarities and differences in territorial governance. The study concludes that the island councils have undergone a process of decentralization that has given them a crucial role in the governance of the Canary Islands.
